“No Place Like Home” is a nice little whimsical diversion… and, better yet, it is free!

Sandwiched between “The Church and the Crown” and “Nekromanteia,” this one-off

episode sees the Doctor show Erimem and her cat around the TARDIS, which is for all intents and purposes their new home. However, the TARDIS has been taken over by a super-evolved Gallifreyan ‘Rovie’ (some sort of rodent) who is sick of the Doctor landing his home slap bang in the middle of danger, and so now it wants revenge!

A tale of two halves really, “No Place Like Home” spends half of the time beautifully wallowing in nostalgia and continuity. The Doctor and Erimem spend their time wandering through the TARDIS, the wardrobe room, the cricket pitch (sic), the Cloister room… they even dig out the old fourth Doctor’s outfit, scarf and all! The rest of the story is quite amusing as Shayde, a servant of the Time Lords, is forced to come to the Doctor’s rescue as the Time Lords foresee this Rovie conquering the universe with the Doctor’s TARDIS!

Interestingly, this story reveals that 'recently' (presumably either in “The Five Doctors” or “Arc of Infinity”; the story does not specify when exactly) the Time Lords planted a remote control in the Doctor’s TARDIS, and yet again they have been manipulating him into interfering with events, this time without even his knowledge, never mind his consent!

In the end, “No Place Like Home” is hardly essential listening, even for a hardened completist, but it is certainly good fun and is perhaps even the best of the Doctor Who Magazine Big Finish freebies to date.

No propositional guidance accompanied the release of this Doctor Who Magazine freebie, however it is clear from the narrative that these events take place immediately after the audio drama The Church and the Crown, at the end of which Erimem elects to stay aboard the TARDIS.

Also of note, this story reveals that ever since the TARDIS visited Gallifrey in Arc of Infinity, it has been under the control of the Time Lords and the Doctor has been unwittingly doing their dirty work!
